My Review: (By Leanne Elise Smith)

As a fan of Gena Showalter's series Lords of the Underworld, I was first introduced to the angel Zacharel in the series seventh novel, The Darkest Secret. Zacharel's emotionless, cold and unsettling presence was so at odds with the loving nature you'd imagine an angel to have--well, he cast a very firm mark on my interest radar. Something about him screamed for a closer inspection... I really wanted to know more! So imagine my surprise when Gena unraveled a brand new series called Angels of the Dark, casting Zacharel 's story in the light!

We first meet Annabel and discover she's in terrible danger, both from inside and outside the institution where she's been committed for the last four years. Despite all that she's been through though, the woman we meet is no meek and shriveling little mouse. Annabelle is feisty, rebellious and seriously pissed at the powerful forces working against her. If anything at all, she's merely resigned to her fate, at the mercy of evil--until the night Zacharel is sent to unravel the mystery of the dark disturbances reigning down over the institution... And they lead him straight to her...

Excerpt: Long ago he’d built a dam to hold back his memories of the past, a barrier he’d desperately needed. Would always need, it seemed. He refortified that dam now, blanking his mind of anything but the present.

At first glance, the woman appeared to be asleep. But then her head lolled to the side, her attention seemingly ensnared by the demon she shouldn’t be able to see. Horror, anger and fear suddenly pulsed from her.

Had she, a mere human, somehow sensed the serpe?

Curiosity courses through Zacharel as he wills himself to materialize before her eyes, allowing her to see him in his natural form. From that moment forward, Zacharel's wall of cold indifference against human nature begins to crumble as he's drawn into the mystery that surrounds Annabel's world. It is the presence of this human woman, hunted by demons, that initially awakens Zacharel's nature to protect... But it is the woman herself who draws him closer, reopening old wounds to expose the man that still does dwell deep within him...

Stories of the angels are as old as time, but Gena Showalter brings us this delightfully steamy tale to slowly unfold before our eyes. Awakening emotion and desire are supposed to be beyond an angel's comprehension, but for Zacharel it is so much more than that. It is a journey of salvation that has only just begun...

The story was incredibly delightful! Watching an angel discovering the delights of humanity made me laugh at times and steamed up my screen at other times.

Excerpt: He had not wondered about these things before, had not cared who did what with whom. He, who had seen humans engage in every sexual act imaginable, had never even contemplated a female in an erotic way. Had never cared enough about anyone to experience any type of jealousy.

Until now. Until Annabelle.

Zacharel’s attraction to her was driving his thoughts, he knew that, but he had no weapons to combat it. He was too inexperienced, had never come against anything like this. Somehow, though, he had to find a way to resist her. He also knew that once a man feasted at the table of temptation, he would not leave it, would glut himself again and again.

The mystery that surrounds the other side of this story are the demons that relentlessly pursue Annabelle. What they want and why they torment her makes for a wonderfully suspenseful paranormal romance.
